A devastating explosion in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, has left at least 31 people dead and 169 others injured. The blast occurred on Friday, targeting a religious centre belonging to the minority Shia community.

The attack took place at the Tarlai Imambargah, located in the Shehzad Town area of the city. Worshippers had gathered for weekly Friday prayers when the explosion ripped through the area, causing mass casualties and chaos.

Suicide Attacker Suspected

Security officials believe the explosion was a suicide attack. According to a security official who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the attacker attempted to enter the compound but was stopped at the gate. Unable to proceed further, the assailant reportedly detonated the explosives right there.

“The attacker was stopped at the gate and detonated himself,” the official stated.

While initial reports point to a suicide bomber, investigations are still ongoing to confirm the exact nature of the device used. Taqi Jawad, the spokesperson for the Islamabad Police, said authorities are currently working to determine if it was indeed a suicide attack or a planted bomb.

Rescue Operations Underway

Emergency services rushed to the scene immediately after the blast. Police and rescue teams have been working tirelessly to help the victims. The injured have been transported to major hospitals in the city, including the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and the Polyclinic, for urgent medical treatment.

The death toll is feared to rise as many of the wounded remain in critical condition.

Official Condemnations

Government officials have strongly condemned the violence. Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, issued a statement denouncing the attack and directed authorities to ensure the best possible medical care for all injured victims.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also expressed his grief and condemned the incident, calling for a thorough investigation into the security breach.

A Recurring Threat

This tragedy marks another grim chapter for Islamabad, which has seen a rise in security incidents recently. This latest attack comes just three months after a similar suicide blast struck the capital.

In November of last year, a suicide bomber targeted a district court in Islamabad, killing 12 people. That incident had already put the city on high alert, and this new attack on a religious centre has further heightened fears among residents.

Conclusion

As the city mourns the loss of 31 lives, security forces are expected to ramp up operations to track down those responsible. The targeting of a specific religious community during prayer time has drawn widespread outrage, highlighting the persistent threat of terrorism that continues to challenge peace in the region. Authorities have promised a swift response as families wait for news of their loved ones recovering in hospitals.
