The Strait of Hormuz is a critical but narrow waterway. Right now, it is a highly dangerous area. It is currently too risky even for the powerful U.S. Navy to secure. However, the U.S. military has a different immediate view. So far, they have rejected requests to protect commercial ships. Defense officials recently spoke to The Wall Street Journal. They clearly stated that Navy escorts are not possible right now. The risk of Iranian attacks on ships is simply too high. Escorts will not happen until the threat of enemy fire drops significantly.

Navy officials shared more details with the Journal earlier in the week. They warned that both U.S. warships and regular commercial vessels face huge risks. The officials used a strong term to describe the Strait of Hormuz. They called the area an Iranian “kill box.”

Military Progress and Complex Tactics

The Pentagon was asked to comment on this situation. They pointed back to a press briefing held on Friday. General Dan Caine is the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He spoke about the serious threats in the strait. He did note some military success. He said U.S. forces have successfully destroyed Iran’s main naval fleet. They have also taken out ships designed to lay underwater mines.

“We’ve made progress,” Caine told reporters. However, he quickly added a warning. He said Iran still has the power to hurt friendly military forces and regular shipping boats. He promised that the military is continuing to work on solving this problem.

The military wants to be completely sure of safety before moving a large number of ships through the strait. They want to align their actions with current military goals. Iran’s main naval fleet might be destroyed, but the regime has backup plans. They still control underwater and surface drones. A Close Call at Sea

A recent event proves this danger. An Iranian vessel got very close to the USS Abraham Lincoln. This aircraft carrier was floating in the Arabian Sea at the time. A Navy destroyer was traveling with the carrier to protect it. The destroyer tried to warn the boat away by firing its 5-inch cannon.

According to CBS News, the cannon missed the small boat several times. The Navy had to send a helicopter to handle the situation. The helicopter fired missiles directly at the Iranian boat to stop it.
